THE GOOD ENOUGH MUMS CLUB FAQS:

Where did the idea for the show come from?

Emily, the writer of the show, developed postnatal depression and postnatal psychosis after the birth of her daughter. She spent more than a year believing she was just a really terrible mother, and that she was somehow ruining her daughter's life simply by being in it.

While in recovery Emily shared her frustration that she was never going to be a perfect mother and would have to accept that the best she could be was good enough. It suddenly hit her that this thing she’d been striving for, this perfect type of mother she was so desperately trying to be, wasn’t the best option and was actually a really destructive way of raising a child.

As she shared her story with other mums, she found they would start confessing their own struggles and fears. Emily became a collector, a keeper, of women’s stories of motherhood and she knew she had to do something with them. With those stories The Good Enough Mums Club was born…

Can you describe The Good Enough Mums Club in three words:

Hilarious. Heartbreaking. True.

How has the show come about?

The show has been in development over the past ten years, it started as a short cabaret style show and has evolved into a full-length narrative story driven by the show’s five characters. Every member of the cast and core creative team is a mum so not only are we juggling childcare, but our children are growing up alongside it too!

The most important thing for us has been that we connect and speak to as many mums as we can from different parts of the country and with different experiences. In order to do this we’ve held workshops with mums across the country in locations such as libraries, hospitals, childcare centres, hotel ballrooms, a mosque & even in pubs.

How do your Baby & Child Friendly Matinees work?

We welcome children under 4 to our special baby & child friendly matinees (our evening performances are strictly 12+). These matinees are a more relaxed and family-friendly experience.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when bringing your child to a child and baby matinee:

  • There's no need to worry about disturbing others if your child fusses. The lights are slightly brighter than a regular matinee, and we understand that kids will be kids.

  • You can come and go as you need to. If you (or your child) need a break, you can step outside for some fresh air or take them to the restroom - come back when you’re ready. You’re also more than welcome to feed your child in the space if you need to.

  • We've got a dedicated space for you to safely park your baby buggy.

  • We know looking after kids keeps you on your toes. So, when you’re with us, you’re our guest and we’ll do everything we can to make you and your child feel welcome. If you need help with anything, just ask a member of the team.

We hope you and your child enjoy our child and baby matinees!

  • P.S. If your child is at the stage where they repeat everything they hear, you might want to consider this as the show is quite sweary!
